Alf Seeling
Principal, Woods Bagot
Alf
completed his architecture studies at Curtain University in Perth
Western Australia in 1985 and then travelled through Europe while
living and working as an architect in his native Austria. His early
work was with noted architects from the Grazer Schule movement Eilfired
Huth and Ernst Giselbrecht on mostly institutional and residential
developments.
Alf then worked as an associate with Foster and Partners for some 10
years based in London and Tokyo, becoming involved in Century Tower,
Tokyo; the Jiu Shi headquarters in Shanghai, and the 888m Millenium
Tower in Shanghai.
In 1996 Alf returned to Australia to start a family and build his own
home and in 2000 joined Woods Bagot in Perth as a design director.
Among the variety of projects that the Perth Studio undertook Alf
designed the Ambassador Apartment and the Futuris Towers. Alf also led
several winning international design competitions from the Perth studio
including the Al Ain University in the UAE. The Perth studio of Woods
Bagot was becoming increasingly active in the Middle East and after two
years of traveling to Dubai on a regular basis took up a permanent role
in the region as the regional design director.
Although active in the Middle East region since 1989, the Woods Bagot
studio started in earnest in 2003 with just three staff and in four
years Alf has contributed to its growth to some 170 multi disciplined
professionals working across the region with studios in Dubai, Abu
Dhabi, Bahrain and Kuwait.
The wealth of development in the region has allowed Alf to masterplan
projects such as Al Barari, Al Kaheel, Dubai Maritime City, Oqyana on
the World Islands, Durrat Al Bahrain and the Qatar Science and
Technology Park.
Some of the high rise developments that he has been involved with
include the Burj Dubai Residences, Bin Sulloom Tower, Park Plaza, Index
Tower (in collaboration with Foster and Partners) and a yet to be
announced super high rise tower which is destined to become one of the
worlds tallest.
